Frequently Asked Questions

Cataract
What is cataract?
Cataract is an eye disease caused by the clouding of the natural lens of the eye, leading to vision loss. You can find detailed information about this on our Cataract page.
What are the symptoms of cataract?
Symptoms of cataract include blurred or cloudy vision, fading colors, sensitivity to light, difficulty seeing at night, and double vision.
What causes cataract?
Cataract is usually associated with the aging process, but trauma, smoking, exposure to sunlight, diabetes, and certain medications can also increase the risk of cataract.
What is the treatment for cataract?
The only effective treatment for cataract is surgical intervention. Cataract surgery involves removing the clouded natural lens and replacing it with an artificial lens.
Does my vision need to deteriorate significantly for cataract surgery?
No. Cataract surgery can be performed at any time after the cataract begins to affect your vision. The operation is a decision made by the doctor and the patient together based on the examination and tests conducted by the doctor.
Will I regain my previous vision after cataract surgery?
If there are no other conditions affecting your vision besides cataract, you may regain your previous vision.
How long do cataract surgeries take?
The advancement of cataracts and the structure of the eyes are factors that determine the duration of cataract surgery. For example, a surgery performed with the phaco method may take as little as 10 minutes or sometimes more than 30 minutes, depending on these factors.
Are cataract surgeries performed with laser?
No. In cataract surgeries, ultrasound (sound waves) rather than laser is used, but this operation is mistakenly known as laser cataract surgery in public.
Will I need medication after cataract surgery?
Special eye drops are used after the operation to facilitate eye healing, reduce the risk of infection and reactions.
What complaints may I have after cataract surgery?
Many patients do not experience any complaints; however, some patients may experience temporary symptoms such as redness, stinging, or watering for a while.
What should I pay attention to after cataract surgery?
Since there is a high risk of infection after cataract surgery, you should not touch your eyes, avoid dusty environments, and avoid contact of your eyes with water. In addition to these, it is crucial to use the medication and eye drops prescribed by your doctor regularly. You should immediately consult your doctor in case of any adverse condition.
I had cataract surgery before but no lens was implanted, and that's why I use thick-lensed glasses. Can I have another surgery to implant a lens?
If there are no objections after the examinations and tests conducted by your doctor, a new operation can be performed to implant an intraocular lens.
Is it possible to prevent the formation of cataract?
While it is not possible to completely prevent the formation of cataracts, adopting a healthy lifestyle and regular eye care can help reduce the risk of cataracts. For example, wearing sunglasses, eating healthy, and not smoking can reduce the risk of cataracts.
